Last Wednesday, I picked up Mom to come stay with the dogs while I went to Philly. As usual, my sister and Mom met me at a Japanese restaurant we love, we raised hell and had a good lunch. Got home, then Rob, the construction guy, came by to do some work. V2 showed up for dinner, we cooked, ate, Rob came upstairs to have some beer and we had wine and I ended up not watching the Season Finale of LOST. Thank goodness I had taped it on the DVR. V2 read tarot cards for Rob and Mom and it was a hoot.
Got up the next morning, packed, drove to the Manchester airport. My flight left on time, got to Philly early and I made the shuttle to the hotel. Just like my Orlando trip - almost too smooth, ha ha! Called my publisher to let him know I'd arrived and we agreed to meet at 3pm at the booth where he was selling my book (and other author's books as well). I got to my room, nice hotel, nice room, freshened up, checked email, then headed downstairs.
My publisher and I hugged - he hadn't seen me since Chris died and I set about helping him sell books at the booth. Boy, what I do for my publisher, ha ha.
At 5 pm, I went back upstairs to change. I was keynote speaker after dinner for the
The American Society of Indexers 2007 Conference. Who are Indexers? They're the folks that put together the index in the back of books. Seriously. Didn't know they had someone doing that, did you?
The hot topic was Web site indexing, which I found fascinating.
I did my talk, sold a bunch of books (which made my publisher happy), then went back to my room to change and meet my publisher in the bar for a drink or two. I got there before him and ran into a table full of women from the conference who offered to buy me a drink:

They were a hoot! My publisher arrived and loved being the only man at the table. Most of the women left, but two stayed - Elizabeth and Maryilyn and we headed out to another bar the waitress recommended,
The Continental. All I could think of was the Saturday Night Live skit with Christopher Walken called
The Continental.
This bar was not that. There were three levels. Level one had a sidewalk cafe and inside a regular bar and restaurant. Level two had two sections and two bars - one had those rattan chairs hanging from the ceiling and booths, the other was futuristic and looked like the inside of a spaceship with padded seating against the walls and these weird looking animals that were big - you sat on them. Turned out they were "ponies" made by some weird artist from the 1960s. The owner of the restaurant/bar buys them when he finds them and replaces broken ones as needed. They sometimes cost up to $2500 each. Youch!
Here's me on one of the ponies. I swear, my eyes are not red like that in real life. And thank goodness I'm getting my hair trimmed this week. I need it:

It was fun! Level three was a rooftop bar that you had to pass a bouncer by for and get to it via elevator only. The first time we tried to go up there was a waiting line. Our waitress on the second level kept a tab on things and told us when it was safe to go up. The bouncer let us old folks go up. I swear, we were the oldest in the place. Everyone else was 21. It was fun, though - this level had open windows all around, so you felt like you were outdoors. A fire blazed in a fire pit, there were different places to hang out. The music wasn't loud, but was good and there was no dance floor. It was very cool!
We finally went back to the hotel at 1 am. I haven't been up that late in ages!
The next morning, I had a hangover, even though I'd only had three scotch and waters. I grabbed some breakfast, then went to my publisher's book table to sign a box of my books for him. He was positive a lot more would sell that day because some people didn't want to wait in line the night before after my talk.
Got to the airport, my flight left on time, got in my car and was exhausted. I drove through McD's for a quick lunch, headed home. Mom and the dogs were happy to see me. I gave them all their presents, then crashed hard for a few hours.
We ended up ordering pizza in because I was too tired to cook and it was great. Rob had come again and had a slice of pizza and a couple of beers, then called it a night. He's slowly getting things done downstairs. His regular construction job has been wearing him out. He did get the walls up in the laundry room and will work on putting the wood floors down this week.
Mom and I watched "The Prestige," which was confusing as hell. I had no idea it was part sci-fi.
Saturday Mom and I went shopping. I took her to JC Penney's to buy her some clothes and shoes. She never lets me do anything for her, so I made her let me buy her something. Then we went shopping for the BBQ on Sunday. Got hamburgers, hot dogs, cole slaw, potato salad - an old-fashioned BBQ. We went out for lunch and relaxed on the deck in my little screen house. Chippy came out a few times to visit and the birds were going crazy.
My garden is popping up and so far, everything has come up okay. My grape vines are actually growing fruit this year, so I am very excited!
The BBQ yesterday was fun. Deb, her husband and son came by, so did Bob and Sanna and we stuffed our faces. Debs husband and son were fascinated by the book collection in the basement and stayed there for a long time. I ended up giving her son a WWII book he loved. Any kid who is interested, truly, in WWII, is good in my book (no pun intended).
After everyone left, I put "Lady in the Water" in the DVD player for Mom and I watched the beginning of "Anonymous Rex" in the bedroom, then hit the sack.
Today I take Mom home and will probably crash early.
Oh - I did watch the LOST finale finally and it was AMAZING! I can't wait for the DVD set to come out. I am going to be going crazy until it comes back next year.
This summer I have mostly local speaking engagements and book signings. I want to get all those books downstairs catalogued and get some book places in here to appraise them, then decide which ones to sell to them or online or to private collectors. It's going to be a slow process. Heck, all I've got is time. I'm in no rush.
